Reach Learning Disability is asking people to 'Save the Date' for their 2018 Christmas Appeal. Between 27th November and 4th December, the local charity is again participating in the Big Give Christmas Challenge - a national online matched giving campaign enabling every £1 donated by the public to be matched by another £1. So a donation of £10 becomes £20!

The charity is raising vital funds towards its healthy eating and fitness activities helping people with learning disabilities in Nottinghamshire reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The charity has already worked hard to secure £20,000 in pledges from local and national supporters and aims to raise a further £20,000 in online donations during the Christmas Challenge week.

Diabetes UK believe prevalence of diabetes in adults with learning disabilities is nearly double the rate of the general population. In most cases this is Type 2 diabetes and, in many cases, can be preventable.

Beverley Rayner, Manager at Reach's Southwell centre, explains: "As a former nurse, I am passionate about addressing problems like diabetes that can lead to other serious health conditions such as stroke. It's really vital to address preventable causes of poor health.

"We want to support people to make simple, small lifestyle changes that fit into everyday life and can be sustained at home. With more funds we could do more courses and reach more people. I really feel that this appeal has the potential to make a big difference to people's lives and hope the community can once again support us as they have done so wonderfully in the past."

Reach will have donation stations at events through Christmas Challenge week - details will be available on www.reachuk.org very soon. The charity would love to hear from people raising funds for our appeal in creative ways – perhaps by making their own small changes!
