Minster’s Big Day Out

Thirty Minster staff and volunteers are pulling out all the stops to make the BBC Big Day Out at the Cathedral and Archbishop’s Palace a day to remember - there really will be something for everyone. Many museums and heritage tourist attractions across Nottinghamshire are offering free entry to their exhibits for their ‘Big Day Out’ on Sunday 30th April. The event is a celebration of the county's history and heritage and is organised by BBC Radio Nottingham. Minster Education Officer, Diana Ives says: “I'm delighted that the Minster Education Team will be offering plenty to occupy families and children - with crafts in the palace and the return (for one day only!) of our 'Fabulous Beasts' trail in the Minster.” The packed itinerary in Southwell comprises: 12.30 - 2.30pm Historic Library of Southwell Minster open (N.B. NO under 7 year olds allowed for health and safety purposes). 12.30 - 2.30pm Minster/Palace open for guided tours – Stewards will give a free brief tour of the Minster/Palace. 12 – 3pm Fabulous Beasts trail – hunt for the ‘Fabulous Beasts’ that are carved into the stone of the Minster – pick up a leaflet from the information desk. 12 – 3pm Children’s Craft activities in the State Chamber of the Archbishop’s Palace. 12 – 3pm Display of a selection of the amazing ‘Copes’ in the stunning setting of the Chapter House in the Minster. 12 – 4pm Self-Guided Walking Tour taking in the sites and history of the Minster grounds and properties including the Education Garden, Potwell Dyke Grasslands, Roman Villa site etc… 3.15 - 4pm Evensong – experience Evensong with the Minster Choir in the majestic setting of Southwell Minster. 12 noon, 1pm, 2pm, 4pm & 5pm Tower Tours (Chargeable). As part of the BBC Radio Nottingham’s Big Day Out there will also be the opportunity to take a Tower Tour – dependent on weather (and no under 7 year olds.) Refreshments will be available and the Minster Bells will be rung at various times on the day.
