10am to 4pm

Bingham Tree Festival

This year there will be a Christmas Tree Festival in the parish church of St. Mary and All Saints, Bingham, from Thursday 30th November to Sunday 3rd December. We expect to set up some 90 trees which will fill the church, each provided by local shops, businesses, organisations and individuals, and decorated to the provider’s own theme. We are grateful that Fraser Brown, a local firm of solicitors, will again be supporting the event in various ways. The festival will be opened at 7.30pm on Wednesday 29th November by Frances Finn who is a presenter at Radio Nottingham, before an invited audience. It will open daily to the public from Thursday to Sunday. Admission charges will be £2.50 adults, 50p children (accompanied) with a family maximum of £6. Profits will go towards the general upkeep of the church which, as Bingham’s senior historical building, always needs some repair doing. On various days there will be carols sung by the Vale Voices Community Choir and songs sung by the Robert Miles School choir. A major raffle will conclude with the draw at around 4pm on the final day. Drinks and homemade cakes will be available throughout the four days. The Festival will end on Sunday with a Carols of Praise service at 6.30pm, followed by mulled wine and mince pies for all provided by our supporters Fraser Brown, solicitors. We hope that you will join us and that our Festival will provide a colourful and memorable start to your own Christmas celebrations.

Christmas at the Workhouse

Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd December. Come and stir the Figgie pudding while listening to the paupers in the kitchen, see rag rugs being made or sit in on a Christmas themed school lesson. Gather round the fire and listen to stories from ‘The Voices of the Poor’, accounts of life in the institution. There’s a Twelve Days of Christmas trail and children’s crafts will be on offer with cornucopias, Christingles and lantern-making among the Victorian themed activities. Create a paper bird, write a seasonal message and hang it on the Christmas tree. Have a go at making your own lantern and then join in the procession down the paupers’ path at 3.30pm each day. The Workhouse choir, accompanied by the harmonium, will be encouraging visitors to sing along to traditional carols. A girls’ choir from the Minster School, Southwell will be performing on Saturday at 3pm. If you are feeling hungry the café will be open and mulled wine and mince pies will also be available. The shop will be stocked with seasonal goods to cater for any last minute gift ideas. The overall winner of the year-long exhibition ‘The History of The Workhouse in 20 objects’ will be announced and all the winners from the four rounds will be on show. See if the winner got your vote? Some of the partner organisations who have worked with The Workhouse over the past year on the theme ‘What is Home?’ will be contributing to the Christmas event. The Bare Project, the creative fellows for the year, will show a film of their multi-sensory performance ‘Dangerous or Otherwise’ created in association with Newark Emmaus Trust. Young people from Minster View, the local children’s home, will be making a creative contribution and once again there will be a foodbank, this year in aid of Newark Emmaus Trust. We will also be celebrating the contribution made by Workhouse volunteers over the year. Their wide-ranging skills and relentless enthusiasm enable us to deliver the varied programme of activities. Maybe you will be inspired to make a New Year’s resolution to join them? Please book tickets priced £5 by calling 0344 249 1895 or see: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/the workhouse

Toy Run 2017

Toy Run The 8th annual Motorcycle and Scooter Toy Run will be held on Sunday 3rd December. From 10am riders will be assembling at The Admiral Rodney on King Street in Southwell. Many of the riders and their machines will be decorated in seasonal dress. Those taking part will bring gifts that they have purchased to donate to the Salvation Army Toy Appeal, the aim of which is to give needy children a brighter Christmas. For the last few years we have been the single largest contributor to this cause. As before, anyone can add to the gifts by bringing an unwrapped gift, suitable for toddlers through to teens and hand them in to one of those taking part. We are a friendly bunch; we don't bite so feel free to come along and support us. Riders will arrive via the Burgage and we will leave at 11am via the Crown corner and Church Street. The recipients of the gifts are selected by the Salvation Army team in conjunction with Sure Start and social services, so this is good direct help. Come and see the spectacle, riders like nothing more than talking motorbikes and scooters!  Give us a wave off too. Hopefully this will get the Christmas season off to a good start.

Southwell Theatre Club

Southwell Theatre Club's last production of the year is 'Two' by Jim Cartwright, author of 'The Rise and Fall of Little Voice'. The play set in a northern pub, revolves not only around the two characters of Landlord and Landlady, played by Nicola Ellis and Steve Atkin, but a myriad of customers who frequent their pub, bringing in little pieces of their own lives. Despite running the pub with professionalism, below the shiny surfaces and welcoming smiles, there is constant bickering, and things haven't been right between the two for years. In the end we find out why. The two actors in the title play all the parts. Directed by Liz Atkin, this is an exciting production which runs from Thursday 7th December to Saturday 9th December, 7.30pm. Tickets available priced £8 from Southwell Library, 01636 812148 or email southwelltheatreclub@gmail.com
