Rock of Ages - Medieval Stonemasons: The Architects of Europe

A FREE half day workshop led by James Wright on historic stonemasonry and the men who shaped not only the material but the architectural appearance of the mediaeval period. The discussion looks at quarrying, transporting, setting out, cutting, mason’s marks and fixing stonework. The place and influence of stonemasons in the history of architecture and how that relates to exciting new archaeological discoveries will also be addressed. James Wright (Triskele Heritage) is a buildings archaeologist who formerly practised as a conservation stonemason. He now acts as an historic stonework specialist and has worked in this capacity at Nottingham Castle, Southwark Cathedral, Knole, Lincoln Cathedral and Reading High Bridge. Booking is essential.
