Newark's Tudor Hall
7pm

Shakespeare in Love

Celebrate William Shakespeare’s 455th birthday with a screening of multiple Oscar winner Shakespeare In Love. On Tuesday 23rd April, Newark’s authentic Tudor Hall will open its doors for this fantastic film night honouring one of Britain’s greatest writers. Enjoying the 20th anniversary of its release this year, the film draws strongly from the plots of the Bard’s plays, particularly Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night, in its humorous fictional portrayal of his life. Its star-studded cast includes Judi Dench, Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes, Ben Affleck, Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and many more. Just 35 years older than the Bard himself, the National Civil War Centre’s Tudor Hall is the perfect setting for this screening event. Guests are invited to sit back beneath its picturesque beams and enjoy this modern classic with friends, family or themselves. The screening, for age 15 and over only, begins at 7pm with the bar open from 6pm and will be introduced by historian and film aficionado Adam Nightingale. Guests are also welcome to join a post-film discussion in the bar. Tickets, costing only £5, are limited for this exclusive event so make sure to book early. Book online at www.nationalcivilwarcentre.com/events or phone 01636 655765.

Charity Golf Day

Norwood Park Golf course plays host to its annual charity golf day – The Iris Jaworski Trophy. The event was set up several years ago by Jonathan Simpson and it continues to flourish as a fun, sociable and (ever so slightly) competitive day. This year, all proceeds will be divided between two excellent charities – Muscular Dystrophy and Leukaemia UK. The cost of the event is £140 per 4 ball; including bacon roll, coffee and 18 holes of golf. Alternatively, £50 to sponsor a hole and display a corporate brand or logo. Anyone interested in entering a 4 ball team or sponsoring a hole should contact jsimpson@upcms.co.uk

May Day Walk at Laxton

We look forward to welcoming Rattlejag Morris Dancers to Laxton Castle on the morning of May 1st. They dance as the sun rises - around 5.25am - and serve bacon cobs, beer and hot drinks to those who come to watch. Everyone is welcome to this traditional event. Following the final dance, when the public are invited to join in, Stuart Rose leads a walk through the open fields to listen to the dawn chorus. In the past the walkers have identified over 30 species of birds by their song if not by sight. May 1st is mid-week so some may need to leave the walk before the end. There are a number of points where you can get back into the village quite easily so everyone can do some, if not all, of the walk. On a lovely morning there is nothing better.

Wes Finch and The Rude Mechanicals

Southwell Library present Wes Finch and The Rude Mechanicals on Friday 10th May at 7pm. In this delightful gem of a concert, The Rude Mechanicals led by the exceptional song-smith Wes Finch, and galvanised by their love of literature, draw on the words of Shakespeare, WB Yeats, William Blake, Philip Larkin, John Masefield and more for their witty erudite, and achingly lively songs. Invigorating guitar and exceptional vocals are accompanied by skillful and vivacious double bass and the subtly interweaving string lines of violin and viola, all is accentuated by percussion and drums. With a blast of originality and fantastic energy, they combine bittersweet acoustic ballads, subtle folk-classical music, jazz, chanson and enchanting poetry recitation into a live show of infectious goodwill and sense of occasion. Tickets are available from the library £10/concessions £9, contact 01363 812148 for further details.

Wellow Maypole Celebrations

The village of Wellow will once more celebrate the arrival of spring, whatever the weather, on the Late Spring Bank Holiday Monday 27th May. A traditional family friendly event centred around the village's spectacular 17 metres high painted maypole on the village green. Following the children's procession from St. Swithin's church, the main focus of Maypole Day is, of course, the Crowning of the new May Queen. After this, the children perform a variety of intricate maypole dances they have learnt in the weeks leading up to the big day. This year all eyes will be on Falconry Experiences, appearing at Wellow for the first time, giving flying and static demonstrations on the maypole green during the afternoon. There will be live music, traditional Punch and Judy, children's swing boats, and lots of stalls, crafts and games to keep everyone amused. Hot and cold food is available throughout the afternoon, including delicious home made cakes from our renowned cake stall in the village hall. Admission is free, but we do hope you will buy a programme and some raffle tickets and have a go on the tombolas to help fund next year's event. Parking is available at Wellow Dam and Wellow House School. See you there!
