Tuesday, 18th December 2018 : 7.30pm

Since its first performance in 1742 in Dublin, Handel’s great oratorio ‘Messiah’ surely has been the nation’s favourite for a performance at Christmas. So, don’t miss out on the performance in Southwell Minster on Tuesday 18th December at 7.30pm, to be performed by the Minster Chorale, the Minster Chamber Ensemble joined by a quartet of excellent soloists directed by Simon Hogan, the Minster’s Assistant Director of Music. It was Charles Jennens who used the words from the King James Bible. He  selected key passages which tell the story of  the life of Jesus the Messiah, which Handel so movingly set to music—the  words and music reflecting the contrasting emotions evoked by the storyline. The oratorio comprises so many memorable moments to savour—the ‘Hallelujah’ chorus perhaps the best known, with the tradition of everyone standing up as the introduction begins; a tradition stretching back to King George the Second who stood up at its first performance in London. Start your Christmas this year at the annual performance of this great baroque oratorio in the wonderful Southwell Minster. Tickets available from the Cathedral Shop, 01636 812933.
